Take Every Passage to Prayer - Volume 2, The Gospels
Tuesday May 21, 2024
Dear Jesus, thank You for creating me. Thank You for creating such an amazing world to live in. I want to learn all about You. I want to learn about who You are and what You have done for me. Please teach me all about You as I study the books of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. I thank You that I have these four gospels to meditate on and to learn of Your deep love for Your Father and for me. Amen.
Father, I can imagine a press conference with Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John sitting at a table with bright TV lights blinding their eyes.
Reporter: "Guys, who do you believe Jesus was?"
Mark: "He was the Messiah, the Son of God. That is good news for us all."
Reporter: "And who do you say Jesus was?"
Luke: "A guy I know is named Theophilus. He asked me this very same question one day. He’s a bright guy and I didn’t want to give him some simple answers; no offense intended, Mark."
Mark: "None taken. You are fine."
Luke: "I decided to conduct an intense investigation into the life of Jesus, interviewing eyewitnesses and organizing everything into a book I could share with Theo. I wanted him to have no doubts about who Jesus was."
Reporter: "And what did you discover?"
John: "Can I answer that for you, Luke?"
Luke: "Be my guest, brother."
John: "Jesus was the Creator of this world."
Reporter: "The Creator, like in Genesis 1?"
John: "Yes. It was Jesus who made all things. In fact, He had a hand in making everything: every animal, every bird, every field, every stream, every mountain, every flower, every vegetable."
Reporter: "I thought God the Father made all those things."
John: "Jesus is God, and He is also with God the Father. God the Father and God the Son are one. They are the same but yet different."
Reporter: "That's over my head."
Matthew: "I've got a genealogy that will help explain how Jesus is the long-promised Messiah."
Luke: "Hey, I've got one too."
Reporter: "I'll look at those genealogies next. John, please continue."
John: "All that makes life worth living has come from Jesus. In a world of sin and corruption, He shines the light for all of us on what it means to find peace and joy by walking with the Father. There's so many false philosophies and religions in this world but Jesus shined the light on what was true."
Reporter: "Not everyone believes that."
John: "I know. He came to the people of this world, the people He created, but we didn’t recognize Him as our Creator. I mean, He owns us because He made us. However, we rejected Him, essentially telling Him to get lost."
Reporter: "How did He respond?"
John: "Jesus came to people and revealed the truth to them, that He was the Son of God. They wouldn’t have believed if He hadn’t come to them and led them to belief. He led many to receive Him as their Savior."
Reporter: "What happened after they believed in Him?"
John: "Jesus gave them the right, because of their faith, and not by human effort or ethnicity, to be adopted by God the Father into His family."
Reporter: "You knew this Jesus?"
John: "He humbled Himself and became a man and walked among us. I knew Him. But don’t be fooled by me saying He was a man – He never lost His divine nature. I saw His glory, His glory as the one and only Son of God, who was sent by the Father full of grace for sinners and truth about how to be restored into relationship with God."
Reporter: "Is He the one John the Baptist was talking about?"
John: "Yes. When John said that Jesus was before Him, he was referring to Jesus being the Creator, the Son of God."
Reporter: "What’s this Jesus mean to me?"
John: "We, you and I, have received an abundance of grace through Jesus Christ, enabling us to know God simply by faith in Jesus. The law, given by Moses, condemned us but the grace of Jesus Christ forgives us of all our wrongdoing."
Reporter: "Was this the Father’s idea?"
John: "Yes. Only Jesus knows the Father because Jesus is God as well. No one else has ever seen the Father but Jesus. Therefore, for us to know the Father too, Jesus had to be the one to come and tell us about Him. The Father sent Him to us for that very purpose."
Reporter: "I want to know more about this Jesus."
Matthew: "Ok. We will all tell you about Him. I will start with His genealogy."
Reporter: "Mark, if this is true, it is good news. Luke, please show me the book you wrote for Theo."
Amen.
