Luke 3:23-38

Father, my accomplishments in life, when compared to the incomparable Jesus Christ, do not merit anything more than a name and a date on a tombstone and a brief listing in a genealogy. “His parents begat Charles”. However, my life was so precious to You that You sent Your Son to die for my sin so that I can spend eternity with You. My value doesn’t come from what I’ve done in life. My value comes from what You’ve done for me. Thank You. Amen.

Father, anticipating our “but what about Mary’s genealogy” question after we read Matthew’s lineage of Joseph, You inspired Luke to include Mary’s family tree in Luke 3:23-38. Some scholars have concluded that Heli was the father-in-law of Joseph, not his father READ MORE.

Matthew 1:1-17

Father, this genealogy is about Jesus, my Savior. He is my King. I ask that You please help me to serve Him forever and ever. Father, thank You for adopting me into Your family because of what Jesus, the focus of this genealogy, has done for me. I am a man who You saved from sin and corruption so that I am now listed in Your version of the genealogy of Jesus Christ. Thank You! Amen.

Father, the Old Testament begins with the statement “In the beginning, God” The text assumes Your existence and does not attempt to prove it. The New Testament begins with a similar declaration about Your Son, Jesus Christ. He is declared to be the “Christ”, the Masiach, the Messiah, the anointed one. He is the one the Old Testament prophecies promised would come, the one who would save the people fr......READ MORE.

Mark 1:1, Luke 1:1-4, John 1:1-18

Dear Jesus, thank You for creating me. Thank You for creating such an amazing world to live in. I want to learn all about You. I want to learn about who You are and what You have done for me. Please teach me all about You as I study the books of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. I thank You that I have these four gospels to meditate on and to learn of Your deep love for Your Father and for me. Amen.

Father, I can imagine a press conference with Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John sitting at a table with bright TV lights blinding their eyes.

Reporter: "Guys, who do you believe Jesus was?"

Mark: "He was the Messiah, the Son of God. That is good news for us all."

Reporter: "And who do you say Jesus was?"

Geopolitics

  • Time and Place. Our sovereign God knew what He was doing.
    • Why was Jesus’ ministry in the Levant? The Levant, the land in which Jesus lived and ministered, was a major trade route between Europe, Asia, and Africa. It is likely that people from all nations and tribes in these continents traveled through the region. Was this a coincidence? No. Our sovereign God knew to place His Son in the Levant so that word could spread throughout the known world of a God-like man who preached forgiveness of sin through faith in Him. It is not unreasonable to conclude that, at least on a few occasions, Jesus taught to crowds that included travelers from Africa, western Europe, Mesopotamia, and the Far East. They would take word about Jesus back to their homelands, planting the seeds for the explosion of Christianity throughout the known world in the centuries......READ MORE.

Was Jesus a Real Person?

Father, it is typical for an individual to be gullible and vulnerable to deception. Without You at the center of our hearts and minds, our judgement is distorted as well as our analysis. Searching for the truth takes substantial time, energy, and money. We would rather just have a good time. Therefore, it is much easier for us to accept the lies that are fire hosed at us every day by those who seek to deceive us. Those who seek to deceive us are often enemies of the four gospels. After listening to their perspectives for even a few moments, we begin to doubt the foundations of our faith, including the existence of Jesus of Nazareth. Father, I ask that You open up my eyes and ears to the truth. Give me discernment to detect lies and then to discard them. As I study Your Word, gird me with truths that will survive the storms of criticism and mockery sure......READ MORE.
